Wembanyama posts rare ‘5×5’ for 2nd time

The freakish achievements keep coming for Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.
His latest came Thursday in Utah, where he put up 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and five blocks for a fabled “5×5” stat line in San Antonio’s 106-88 triumph.
Per the Elias Sports Bureau, it marks only the 23rd 5×5 since the NBA began recording steals and blocks in the 1973-74 season. Rockets legend Hakeem Olajuwon holds the record with six. He, former Utah forward Andrei Kirilenko and now Wembanyama are the only players in league history with multiple 5x5s.
Wembanyama’s first 5×5 came last season in just his 51st career game with 27 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, five steals and five blocks in a loss to the Lakers.
Wembanyama had been off to a slow start (for him) following a historic Kia NBA Rookie of the Year campaign in which he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals and a league-leading 3.6 blocks. He was limited to just six points and eight rebounds in Wednesday’s loss to Oklahoma City.
But the 20-year-old Frenchman was back to his all-around best against the Jazz, leading the Spurs in every major category but assists (Chris Paul had 10).
“It tells me I need to get my standards up when I don’t get 5x5s because I am able to help my team in all those areas,” Wembanyama said, per the San Antonio Express-News. “It should be a consistent thing. As I have said before, it is something we must have, something I must have more often to help my team.”
